Pardon me for the long hiatus

Wow! I really dunno where to begin. It seems like ages sincd i last wrote here. It may b all so quiet and lifeless here but in reality, my days were filled to the brim with endless invitations, special events and occasions. It was really crazy and tiring but i survived. Now things are getting pretty quiet & relax & it feels weird.

Looking back, all the happy, fun scenes came to mind and i was glad i made great effort to be part of each special occasion. Tired yes but nothing can beat to b in the company for friends and family.

Till the next entry (which i hope will come along very soon)

Iftar Ingat Members

We got together for Iftar and to catch up in a closed event among friends over Badoque Cafe semi buffet spread that took place on 10th Sep 09

In our laughs over a hearty meal, let’s remember the less fortunate kids.

At the same time, Thread Bandits, PEONFX and UNKL347 have auctioned off some of their goodies and biddings in fact started very low. All proceeds plus donations have been forwarded to Muhammadiyah Welfare Home.

Thank you to all who made it happen and to those who came, thank you for your support!

Special request by the sister and nephew

My eldest sister mentioned that she’s craving for tiramisu and her son asked me to do something nice for him, in the form of blueberry muffins. So I spent yesterday’s morning whipping up those requests before heading for tahlil at faizan’s.

Blueberry Muffins

The recipe is by Martha Stewart.

If you watch the video, you can see that she really uses fresh blueberries which I didnt have time to scout for. I ended up buying a packet of blueberries from Phoon Huat, which I assumed are fresh, tho they are rather wet, squashed up and watery. Probably the reason why my muffin batter turn purplish. Also, my muffins didnt turn out as fluffy or plump as Martha’s. One reason could be becoz my muffin pan is not a medium one. Another reason is could be mixing of the ingredients. I probably over beat. I used the electric mixer, not the handheld one.

My muffins turned alright sumhow. Soft on the inside and the outside is too brown. I’m still trying to figure out my mum’s new oven. My nephew enjoyed the muffins and congratulated me for my first attempt. I know I cld do better.

Tiramisu

Seriously, this is my first attempt at whipping up the well known dessert. It’s a really simple dessert to make and some of my friends who made it before, did it very well. The recipe is courtesy of Is and you can find it at her recipe blog

I wanted to add melted white chocolate (Jamie Oliver’s version) but I lost focus and forgotten all about the white chocolate in the saucepan. I forgotten all about double boiling and conveniently just dumped it all into the saucepan. When I finally realised, it was too late. It was all burnt.

I also thought that I soaked the lady fingers’ biscuits in too much coffee. So, in the end, the biscuits were too soggy and intense coffee taste, which can taste bitter to some. The cream mixture is not that smooth and creamy, the way I like it. I probably overwhipped the whipping cream which resulted the cream to separate. My younger nephew decided to help me out at the last stage = dust cocoa powder and he ended up dusting way too much cocoa powder.

I wasnt too happy with the final results but it’s still edible ah. Will have another go at it again.

3 2 1 Polo

A week ago, I was introduced to a relatively new sport, well at least, here in Singapore, Bike Polo. The very first bike polo event was initiated by the cool peeps of Peonfx You can find videos and pics at the site too.

Great turnout by fellow fixie riders who formed into teams of 3 and they went out to score some points and of coz to have fun. So much fun they had, that the 2nd bike polo event came soon after and the 3rd one will be held on 4th Sept.

I thought it’s really amazing to be playing polo on bikes. One hand maneuvering the bike and the other gripping the polo stick. Personally for me, to be riding a fixed gear bicycle or fixie is already challenging enough and it’s something that you’ll need to learn and get used to. I tried riding on one and had a hard time, mainly becoz I was not confident enough, especially knowing that there are no brakes. Jay and Sue have been coaxing me for the longest time to get one so that I can start riding with them and yes, to lose weight since it’s some form of healthy lifestyle. All I could think of is the colours of my fixie if I own one. hehe. I guess for now, I really need time to really get all enthusiastic about owning one. Also becoz, currently, at home, there’s no space for storage. I enjoy riding but on a fixie, that will take me sometime.

So till then, I’ll just stick to admiring those fixie riders, learn more and at the same time pick up new jargons.

Sweet Cherry Tomato and Sausage Bake

Had iftar with the Butterfly gals,Nin and Iman over at FizaHan’s last nite. There’s so much food since we did potluck. Well done Fiza&Han for your first attempt at oreo cheesecake and lasagne. Maggie, once again thrilled us by preparing her finger licking, smacking-licious honey glazed ribs. Nin brought potato, egg and minced meat salad. There’s also otak-otak, rojak (courtesy of Anne&Din) and Onan Road karipap (courtesy of Remy&Mar) Oh, btw, have you tried karipap Cili padi? Remy&Mar bought some last nite and they said it was really good. I didnt dare to take a bite. The heavily preggy Nad also managed to bake some brownies for desserts. So, what did yours truly prepared?

Prior to the iftar, I have a few food options to choose from. I wanted to make chicken wraps but couldnt find the recipe. The last time I made it was 2 years ago, for Mohd’s birthday. Searched for new recipes to try online and finally settled for Jamie Oliver’s Sweet Cherry Tomato and Sausage Bake.

It’s a rather simple meal where you throw everything into a tray and pop it into the oven. This half bake, half stew dish is bursting with flavours becoz of the use of several types of herbs. Definitely a dish to try out for those of you who love cherry tomatoes. I think the only challenge is to get the right sausages. I had no time to search for those halal huge, fat sausages. Dont know even where to start. So, I had to make do with Zac Meat Cabonassi sausages.

Initially, I was rather unsure if the dish will turn out alrite especially since the ingredients used were pretty simple and it may not suit to everyone’s taste buds. Mohd’s comment when he saw the final product was not helping too. He said the dish looks like dalcha with sausages. Kinda disgusting. But during iftar, the dish was the first to be wiped out clean. I served it with slices of warm garlic and herb foccacia. Almost everyone loves it. Mohd came to me “B, it’s damn nice ah! Sorry abt my earlier comment” hahaha.

Thank god, it did turn alrite and satisfied that everyone enjoyed it. It’s definitely a recipe for keeps. Definitely a comfort food for me. Some last words, Jamie never disappoints me :P

That thing I do every month

Recently I went for my monthly hair trim at my usual hair salon, Hair Journal at Aljunied and it dawned on me that I’ve never really written about the salon or how a visit to the salon is a therapeutic experience for me.

Hair Journal is a little salon in the heartlands. It may not be an award winning one or one that boasts the top hairdressers in Singapore but with a hairdresser/ hairstylist that can really cut my hair, at an affordable price (especially if you join as a member, 40%), it suits fine by me So yea, I guess it deserves mention, at least here in my blog.

Hair Journal was first introduced by Rina, who used to work in the area. If I’m not wrong, she chanced upon the salon, had a haircut, liked it and was telling us about the place. Rina was also telling us about its baroque inspired interior and the antiques (Gilbert, the owner collects them) you can find in the salon. I remembered after that, Galuh had a haircut there, with me following suit. In the end, our short hairstyles looked pretty much the same, with each of us sporting a teeny weeny tail like end at the back of our heads. It was soo funny but it was well done.

To date, I’m the only one who is still patronizing the salon. I remembered my first visit to Hair Journal four years ago. I went with the intention of chopping off my curly, thick, heavy, locks. I wanted the short hairdo back and also mainly becoz I lost the bet Mohd and I made while he was in the USA. I went with heavy contemplation becoz not everyone can really cut my hair. I was introduced to Toni and gave him all my trust to give me that drastic change. I remembered everybody in the salon especially all the staff was amazed at my big hair. Some of them even mentioned how “sayang” it was to chop it off. Initially, Toni was very skeptical but he said he’ll try his best. End result: a new funky short hairdo which I immediately fell in love.

Since then I kept going back till Toni resigned. Livia had cut my hair before so it’s only natural that she was my next alternative. She still is my fave hairdresser. She is the longest serving staff there, followed by Eve who cuts really well too. Mohd, Nassar and Amirul go the same salon too. Kotak, Amirul’s fren also goes there too.

The monthly visit that usually lasts about 1 hour or so indeed acts as a stress reliever for me. The snipping sound and motion of the thinning scissors and the ‘whole hairdressing procedures’ can really calm me down, switching to relax mode and eventually falling to sleep. I also particularly love the hair washing session where I’ll be given a good 10 – 15 mins head massage. That is good enough to perk me up. So really, these are the little simple pleasures I look forward to every single month.

I have friends introducing their hairdressers to me and there are times I have the intention of trying them out and at least to expand my choices. Some of them though are costly. For someone who needs a monthly maintenance like me, paying anything above $30 is rather heavy on the pockets. So I guess, till I really need to find another hairdresser, I shall stick to Hair Journal.

You can find Hair Journal at Blk 113, Aljunied Ave 2, #01-23 Singapore 380113 Tel: 67438616. Do make appointments.

From the last visit, I was told that Hair Journal has opened yet another salon in the Tampines heartlands. The 2nd one was opened at AMK hub a year ago or so. Not too sure about the exact addresses but you can check out with the staff.

It’s easy to forget the blues

On Monday, I hurriedly chucked all the blues in the deepest, darkest nook I could find in the office and made my way to Bugis to meet up wif the GGs for dinner at Seoul Garden. A very much needed one I must say. We filled our tummies to the fullest, especially since we were sooo hungry and having to wait for tables for almost 40 minutes. The only bummer: none of us actually remembered to print out the coupons that entitled us ladies to 50% off. Oh well.

Nin joined us halfway through when the rest of us were almost mendak from all the food, smoke, gossips and noisy bunch at the next table. Was glad to know that Awan was no longer missing (the reason why Nin was late) Btw Nin, dun worry k, u were not a downer that nite.

After dinner, we decided to continue the night at Arab St. It took us a good 20 mins or so (or mayb even more) to get to Arab St coz we were cam whoring along the way. Oh, and what actually got me shrieking in joy and instantaneously, belting out Beyonce’s ‘All the Single Ladies’ and dancing at the traffic junction? It is none other than a ticket to catch Beyonce live in September!!! It was an advanced birthday gift from the Butterfly Gals. Fiza flashed it out in front of me, just before she and Jjay said goodbye. Thank you gals!!! For awhile, I totally forgotten about my bloated tummy and aching back.

Over at Kampong Glam Café, where we finally decided to have drinks becoz the sarabat stall was packed, our conversations and gossips thrived effortlessly, accompanied by the keroncong music, blasting from the trishaw parked opposite us, as background music. Soon after, we turned our attention to a group of minahs, who was trying to do a photo shoot under poor lightings and with the model sitting on the rickshaw, (in nin’s words) posing Variasari poses. One of the minahs happened to be someone Salim and I acquainted before. Someone with a reputation. Someone whom I choose to categorise under our so called “salah people” circle. Sibuk betul dia, feeling jadi art director cum stylist. Haha.

That nite, I went to sleep still feeling all bloated and waking up the next morning, feeling the same. Salim and I agreed that we just simply can’t eat as much as we did 10 years ago. Our bodies can’t keep up anymore and we feel the effects straightaway. Despite all that, I welcomed the morning with gratefulness. Thank you for the joy and laughter.
